Located in the Porto das Barcas Complex, the Museu do Mar was built for the cultural, historical and environmental enhancement of the only open sea Delta in the Americas, the Parnaíba Delta. Thinking about the importance of preserving the knowledge, cultures, memory, fauna and flora of the region; has in its collection an exhibition that safeguards the Delta, through its material and immaterial culture, composed of men and women, riverside and city dwellers; telling their stories, their work, their beliefs and the faith that moves them day by day towards work, leisure and religion. From the waters, women and men earn their living and supply a gastronomic and handicraft market in the region and its surroundings, where together with nature they are the ones who make up, in the midst of a natural setting, the living landscape, the living Delta.
